Residential Solar Scams are On the Rise: Here’s How to Protect Yourself

April 10, 2023 by Solar Slate Solutions

The rising costs of home energy have led many people to explore switching to solar energy. This interest, unfortunately, has led to some less than ethical people who are trying to take advantage of homeowners. Here’s what you need to watch for to protect yourself:

The Knock on the Front Door

Legitimate solar installation companies do not go door to door, trying to drum up business. If someone is knocking on your door, telling you you have a great house for solar, but you need to act right away, it’s most likely a scam. The decision to switch to solar energy represents a significant investment for the homeowner. You should never be pressured into making a decision!

The Promise Everything Will Be Free

Sunshine is free, but everything else in this world costs money. Be very wary of solar providers who promise you will never have to pay another utility bill as long as you live. For most people, that’s not true – although significant reductions in the household utility bill are common. In the same line, before you make financial decisions based on tax credits and incentives you’re told are available, do a little research to find out what those credits and incentives are, and if you’ll qualify for them.

Pressure to Put Down an Immediate Deposit

A common trait among scammers is the pressure they put on their victims to put down an immediate cash deposit. Legitimate businesses understand that people need time to make a decision. There is no reason that you can’t stop and think this decision through before committing to solar. When these bad actors get a deposit, they often disappear with the money and never do any work at all.

Protect yourself. Research any contractor you’re considering doing business with. They should have a business license, and be bonded and insured. If they’re not – don’t have them work on your house!
